Smart Diaper Technology – Everyday Wellness Monitoring in a Low Cost, Manufacturing Friendly Package

The paper describes a new, disruptive platform technology incorporating low cost sensors to measure wetness, movement, falls, pressure sore risks and hydration to provide wellbeing data to caregivers of infants and the elderly.

Our goals with this technology are extreme low cost, simplicity, and utility. Key issues addressed include:

•     minimizing risk of leakage;

•     reducing the risk of skin breakdown and infection;

•     optimizing product utilization;

•     reducing the risk of falls;

•     reducing process inefficiencies of caregiver scouting trips to identify when to change;

•     minimizing the resultant labor and energy to wash wearer,      clothes, bedlinen and furniture; and

•     reducing urine odor associated with delayed product changes

The technology is focused on mass market appeal, and includes the following attributes:

•     Everyday wellbeing monitoring solution

•     Ultra-low sensor cost

•     Fully integrated into diapers and incontinence products

•     No tooling costs or assembly-line modifications for product manufacturers

•     Low cost data logger

•     Smart device friendly

•     Patented

•     Platform technology

•     Cloud ready

Test results demonstrate excellent functional performance, particularly given the extreme low cost of the sensor. Key findings include:

•     Sensor has no impact on normal product performance or comfort

•     Sensor is responsive out to 100% saturation

•     The sensor is virtually immune to variations in salt concentrations

•     No significant difference in sensor response due to differing time and volumes between micturition events

•     Good volume estimates based on novel algorithms

•     Validated low cost, high speed sensor manufacturing

•     Validated zero impact on existing diaper line tooling or efficiencies

The everyday monitoring solution includes effective analytics and associated software, in the form of smart Apps. Key functional elements include the monitoring of multiple concurrent users, alerting based on a preferred response time, alerting based on multi-factored risks including leakage, time in one position, falls and changes in hydration levels. Cloud based Dashboard reporting for management supervision in institutional care is also provided.
