Advanced Absorbent Core on a Roll Technology or the Quest for a Pulpless Product and Why

Since the switch from Cotton Textile Diapers in the 1960’s, fiberized cellulosic pulp containing diapers have been the mainstay of our industry along with the inherent problems from utilizing wood pulp. Fiberized cellulosic pulp is required to provide absorbency speed but results in a wet kitchen sponge feel immediately after use. To counter this feel, superabsorbent polymers are added to help desorb the wet pulp. Then a distancing layer is further added to move this wetness away from the body. Cellulose is a known insulator, tends to keep the body warmer when dry and colder and stays wet after use. Like wearing a thick cotton sweater soaked in the rain. Due to the inherent slow absorbency rate of superabsorbent polymers, they could not be used solely in diapers. Until now!

Alternatives to fiberized wood pulp include Airlaids, Gelok, Drylock, Absorbent Paper and ALYNE Diamond Quilt® Absorbent Core. Pros and Cons for each will be explored, including the current test methodology bias towards fiberized wood pulp absorbent cores.
