Our Synthetic Seas: Solutions to Plastic Pollution

A decade of sailing around the world to understand ocean plastic pollution has led to a deeper understanding of the sources and systems that create waste and impacts on people and the planet, and this has inspired a revolution in plastic packaging design and product delivery, as well as policies to mitigate the harm from plastic. But it quickly gets complicated as stakeholders try to get ahead of public perception and consumer preference. Therefore, it is essential that we deconstruct this complexity, focusing on the preventative strategies that will end this global problem, enabling brands to better align their actions to their values.

BIOGRAPHY

Marcus Eriksen is the Research Director and co-founder of the 5 Gyres Institute. Having sailed around the world, he researches the global distribution and ecological impacts of plastic pollution- publishing the first global estimate of all plastic of all sizes floating in the world’s oceans. Today Eriksen’s research is focused on helping consumer brands and municipalities worldwide to understand the systems and sources of plastic pollution in their region, then driving preventative strategies to stop the flow of plastic from land to sea.
